The University of Alberta Perinatal Research Centre invites applications for a Head of Fetal Physiology. Selection criteria for candidates will focus on your demonstrated ability to conduct superior quality independent research, and the potential to establish an active, highly motivated and externally-funded research program. Applicants must be prepared at the doctoral level with at least two years of postdoctoral training.

The Perinatal Research Centre is considered to be one of the top Centres in the world, comprising investigators from the faculties of Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, Nursing, and Rehabilitation Medicine.

PEDIATRIC RESEARCH DIRECTOR

DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is seeking a Director of Pediatric Research. DeVos Children's Hospital is a 136-bed university-affiliated tertiary care center with 25 hospital-based pediatric faculty, a strong pediatric residency program, and a highly-committed, well-organized community of primary care pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists. The faculty are young, well trained, with active and enduring research interests. The director will promote and oversee research within all of the Children's Hospital programs. Candidates should be eligible for appointment at the associate professor or professor level and have demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding. Highly desirable are skills in outcomes and health services research.

CONFERENCE PREVENTION OF HIV TRANSMISSION FROM MOTHERS TO INFANTS

A conference on Global Strategies for the Prevention of HIV Transmission From Mothers to Infants will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Washington, DC, September 3-6, 1997. The conference will address critical intervention issues by combining multidisciplinary scientific updates what topic-specific workshop presentations. This international conference is sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology in collaboration with the Office of AIDS Research, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and is cosponsored by the American Foundation for AIDS Research; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; the Fogarty International Center, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, NIH; and the International Aids Society. Specific goals of the conference are to provide updates on current research and concepts concerning prevention of mother-to-infant HIV transmission, and to allow opportunities for researchers and public health workers from developing countries to identify implementation obstacles, practical applications of current research and clinical results, and ways to further extend knowledge to reduce mother-to-infant HIV transmission.

WORKSHOP ON RESISTANCE TO THYROID HORMONE

The Third International Workshop on Resistance to Thyroid Hormone (RTH) will be held at the Given Institute and The Mountain Chalet in Aspen, Colorado, October 12-13, 1997, prior to the 1997 Annual Meeting of the American Thyroid Association in Colorado Springs. The Workshop will focus on clinical and basic aspects of RTH, mechanism of thyroid hormone action and animal models of RTH with brief presentations with ample time for informal discussion and posters. Particular emphasis will be placed on participation by successful young investigators, junior faculty and minorities.
