At the present time the treatment of chronic INP is not entirely satisfactory. Many children from chronic ITP do not respond to steroid therapy, IV Ig, either alone or in combination with steroids. It is known that interferon-a-2b can modulate the effect of B-cells involved in the autoimmune process and alter macrophage behaviour responsible for platelet destruction.

Patients and Methods: 7 children with severe and persistent ITP, resistant to steroids and IV Ig treatment, were enrolled in the study. Age range; 4-15 years, duration of the disease range; 2-5 years. Platelet count was less than 10,000 in all patients, megakaryocytes were 0,235±0,009χ109/1. All children were treated according to SHIP-protocol (s/c injections of IFN-a-2b 3 times a week for 12 doses).

Results: 2 (29%) pts achieved CR (platelet count >150.000), 3(43%) pts had the type IIa response (plt count >40.000 during 6 weeks). 2 pts did not respond.

Conclusion: Preliminary results of interferon-a-2b treatment in children with chronic ITP are hopeful. Randomized study is required.
