Abstract
N-Nonanoylation of chitosan was studied in comparison with N-acetylation, and the influence of modifications on the adsorption of copper(II) ion was elucidated to develop high performance adsorbents based on this under-utilized abundant resource. Controlled acylations with the corresponding acyl chlorides were established in a highly swelled state. The adsorption capacities proved to be highly enhanced at low extents of substitution; more remarkable improvement was achieved with nonanoyl groups than acetyl groups.
