Wightmanite, Mg5(O)(OH)5[BO3]·nH2O, a Natural Drainpipe

Abstract

ABOUT 40 natural compounds, especially hydroxides, borates and carbonates, can be structurally described on the basis of triangular partitionings of the plane. Physically, these compounds are fibrous with a fibre translation of 3.0–3.2 Å, the octahedral edge distance. Although the structures are three-dimensional octahedral frameworks, non-equivalent atoms do not overlap or superimpose, and solution and classification of such structures are two-dimensional “wallpaper”-type problems.
