Reversed Seismic Refraction Line on the Troodos Massif, Cyprus

Abstract

THE experiment described here forms part of an intensive study of the Troodos Igneous Complex of southern Cyprus designed to evaluate the suggestion that it is an upthrust slice of oceanic crust1. Previous work on the petrology2, palaeo-magnetism2, magnetic field (F. J. Vine and I. G. Gass, to be published) and outcrop seismic velocities3 has proved inconclusive. The internal structure2 and gravity field1 of the Massif do, however, seem to be consistent with this interpretation. Thus although a great deal of geological and geophysical work has been carried out on the Troodos Massif, it is still debatable whether it is a fragment of deep-sea floor.
