Distribution of Zinc in North Atlantic Deep-sea Sediments

Abstract

WE are investigating the geochemistry of the volatile elements such as Zn, Hg and Cd in deep-sea sediments, and here we report measurements of the distribution of Zn in North Atlantic sediments. In the past, studies of the distribution of trace elements in marine sediments usually involved spectrographic analysis1–4, so did not include the volatile elements; in our investigation we determined the Zn content of the top portions of a series of deep-sea cores by atomic absorption and X-ray fluorescence techniques (Table 1). The total carbonate was estimated by an infrared method5 and by dissolution in acid.
