Abstract
THE Appalachian Province has been recognized to account for the distribution of Lower and Middle Devonian brachiopods in eastern North America1–3 and was formed during the Helderbergian, at the beginning of the Devonian, but within the upper part of the Tippecanoe Sequence4, by general withdrawal of marine waters from cratonic and adjacent shelf regions. Sequences are the principal packets of sediments that formed in response to cyclic onlap and offlap of the craton over a long span of time; they have been interpreted in terms of eustatic fluctuations of sea level5–7.
