Detection of Low Temperature Transitions in Amorphous Polymers

Abstract

WE report here a new phenomenon observed in the scattering of light by glassy solids that gives rise to a novel technique for the detection of low temperature transitions in amorphous polymers. Photon-phonon scattering has been used recently to study polymeric glass transitions as well as some lower temperature transitions1–4. The ratio of inelastic (Rayleigh) scattering intensity to elastic (Brillouin) has also been examined, especially with regard to the effect of transitions on frozen-in strains1,2. In this communication, we describe the results of an experiment measuring the absolute intensity of Rayleigh scattering at a fixed angle as a function of temperature for poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).
