The American Heart Association estimates that 34.5 million adults in the US have high cholesterol, and a further 100 million are thought to have levels considered borderline to high. A greater understanding of the causes and consequences of heart disease has led to a more aggressive approach to cholesterol management. This has, in turn, fuelled enormous growth of the hypolipidaemic market, in particular for statins.
