The NIH's Porter Neuroscience Research Center is a prime example. Opened last June, the centre brings together researchers from several NIH institutes on the basis of thematic research interests such as synapses, cognition and mood — the first interdisciplinary arrangement of its kind on the NIH campus.

Cutting-edge equipment and a solid start-up package attracted John Isaac, a recently arrived senior investigator who studies the molecular mechanisms of developmental synaptic plasticity. “The NIH upfront could offer me an entire budget to run my lab for five years at least,” says Isaac, who came from the University of Bristol, UK. Typically, neither UK nor US universities can match such a commitment.
