Six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been associated with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in a Japanese population. Replicating the results of the Japanese study on an Indian population, researchers have found no significant association of these SNPs with POAG1.
Studying 470 POAG cases from India, the researchers screened the SNPs by resequencing.
They found no significant association of any of these six SNPs with POAG. The researchers provide several explanations for this difference in the results between the Indian and Japanese studies including their stringent selection criteria that had only high-pressure glaucomas and difference in allele frequencies.
The researchers say that the the association of these six candidate SNPs is not a universal phenomenon and the POAG-associated variants need further validation across different populations.
