Abstract
IT is generally agreed that glutamate is a key intermediate in the assimilation of ammonia by yeasts. This has been demonstrated particularly in Candida utilis by Sims and Folkes1 and in Saccharornyces cerevisiae by Jones, Pragnell and Pierce2. These workers followed the incorporation of ammonia into cell material using 15N as label, and established that only glutamate and glutamine derived their α-amino nitrogen directly from ammonia, and were synthesised at a rate sufficient to supply the α-amino nitrogen required for cellular growth. All other amino acids were synthesised by way of transamination reactions.
