Selectivity Isotherms for Permeation of Monovalent Cations in Gallbladder Epithelium

Abstract

IN measuring transepithelial permeability ratios of cations in gallbladder, we have found that ‘biological variation’ among different individuals, between species, and as a function of pH is not random but defines systematic patterns. These patterns, the so-called selectivity isotherms, are significant because they are in striking accord with Eisenman's1–3 theory of selectivity, and because they provide a ‘fingerprint’ of the cation-selective membrane sites.
