Poly(A) Sequences in Plant Polysomal RNA

Abstract

POLYADENYLIC acid (poly(A)) sequences have been isolated from cytoplasmic1–11, nuclear1,2,7,8,11, and mitochondrial12,13 RNA of mammalian cells. In most cases the RNA from which the poly(A) sequences have been isolated seems to be messenger or postulated messenger precursor11. Poly(A) sequences have also been isolated from the mRNA of birds14,15 and from the RNA of viruses7,8,16–22, yeast23,24, and from one bacterium24. So far, it has not been reported that higher plant RNA contains poly(A) although there are reports of AMP-rich RNA in plants (for review see ref. 25).
