Two New Ribosomal Precursor Particles in E. coli

Abstract

The assembly of E. coli ribosomes is a stepwise process with a limited number of intermediary precursor particles consisting of rRNA and an incomplete set of ribosomal proteins. Particles with sedimentation constants of 21S and 26S have been reported as intermediates in the assembly of the 30S subunit1–3, and precursor particles sedimenting at 32S and 43S have been reported for the 50S subunit1,2,4,5. Most of these studies were based on pulse labelling, enabling extremely small quantities to be detected.
