Abstract
ACTIVATED factor X (Xa) is a proteolytic enzyme with an active site serine1. In the presence of factor V, calcium ions and phospholipid, it catalyses the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin during blood coagulation2. Factor X is activated in the extrinsic clotting system by a complex of factor VII, tissue factor and calcium ions by limited proteolysis3. A similar product may also be obtained from factor X by the action of the coagulant protein from Russell's viper venom (RVV), and calcium ions4.
