Abstract
A PROMINENT class Of light polyribosomes in cleaving sea urchin embryos has been shown to synthesize histones1–4. A rapidly-labelled “9S” RNA having the characteristics of mRNA can be isolated from these polyribosomes5–7. We present here evidence that this 9S RNA programmes the cell-free synthesis of all the major histone classes. A similar class of mRNA obtained from S-phase HeLa polyribosomes8–9 also promotes in vitro histone synthesis10.
