Are Concanavalin A Receptor Sites Mediators of Cell-Cell Adhesion?

Abstract

THE identity of the chemical sites that mediate adhesions between tissue cells remains to be established. Attractive candidates for this role include carbohydrate-containing groups which have in recent years been shown to be common structural constituents of animal cell membranes1. A number of lines of evidence2 indicates that these surface sugar-containing molecules may play a part in mediating cellular interactions, perhaps as “recognition sites”.
