Effect of Electrical Stimulation of Nerve Roots on Amino-acid Incorporation into Axonal Protein in vitro

Abstract

VERY little is known about protein synthesis associated with membrane renewal and about whether it is modulated in any way by excitation. In vitro studies on synaptosome preparations have shown that a significant proportion of amino-acids is incorporated into the membrane fraction1–4. Moreover, manipulation of the ratio of Na+ : K+ in the incubation medium has shown that the rate of amino-acid incorporation into synaptosome protein can be maximized by an optimum ratio as long as the external potassium concentration exceeds normal5,6. Because membrane ATPase activity increases similarly with changes in ionic composition5,7, it is thought that increased functional activity, resulting in significant redistribution of cations, will enhance the rate of protein synthesis in excitable structures8.
