Effect of Hormone Priming on Retention of 3H-Oestradiol by Males and Females

Abstract

BOTH oestrogen and progesterone, acting over periods of many hours, regulate various aspects of physiology and behaviour during the oestrous cycle1. In the female, oestrogen acts at the level of the hypothalamus to regulate gonadal function2 and oestrous behaviour3. A direct effect on the pituitary has also been detected4, and the labelled steroid has been shown to be retained by uterus, brain and pituitary5,6. Because oestrogen-progesterone synergism and the biphasic pattern of response to progesterone are essential for maintenance of the reproductive cycle1, it seemed possible that the pattern of retention of the hormones might reflect these interactions and that they might differ between the sexes7-10.
