Although immune checkpoint inhibitors have transformed the treatment of several tumour types, they have shown little benefit in microsatellite stable (MSS) colorectal cancer (CRC). This poor efficacy is attributed in part to the low tumour mutational burden, resulting in a lack of mutation-derived neoantigens. The tumour microbiome is thought to play a role in cancer progression, and intratumoral bacteria may provide a source of neoepitopes for immunotherapy.
