Most patients suffering from brain injury following a stroke exhibit some degree of spontaneous recovery. Although the brain is unable to regenerate, surviving neurons around an injured region are thought to play major roles in promoting functional recovery. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that induce neural repair after brain injury is crucial to the development of novel therapeutic strategies.
