D B Dental offer a choice of options designed to enable practices to meet their amalgam separation requirements, which has now become law. For new equipment installations they recommend Durr VSA 300, 600 or 900 combination suction units depending upon whether it is a single, double or four surgery practice. The suction units separate air, secretions and solids in one go. They also separate amalgam particles and collect them in a separate collection receptacle. Delivering high performance suction, at peak demand and during continuous operation, they use air vortices and separating turbines to separate the solid and liquid constituents from the suction air. This permanently improves foam tolerance and prevents interruptions caused by too high liquid flows or blood foam. Before the waste-water pump drains away it is fed into a centrifuge where the amalgam particles are separated. With higher than 97% efficiency the amalgam ends up in a collection vessel, which has an automatically monitored filling level. Optical and acoustic signals indicate when this needs changing. Alternatively existing suction units can be upgraded with the addition of a stand alone amalgam separator, for example the CA1 which is designed for use with Durr's VS300 suction unit or similar sized units from other manufacturers.
