Seal of Success

The National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek in Cornwall successfully uses Difflam oral spray, a 3M product, as part of its treatment for sick and injured seals.

Ellen Preston, the sanctuary animal care supervisor, says Difflam is very effective in improving the oral health of her sea-going patients. 'Some seals may be suffering from mouth ulcers or gingivitis. We also use Difflam spray to control any soreness when we have to put a tube down a seal's throat to give it fluids.'

The National Seal Sanctuary begun humbly from a beach cafe at St Agnes in the 1950s. Today the sanctuary occupies 40 acres of the Helford Estuary, where 10 seal pools host both rescued and recuperating grey seal pups.

Look seriously at Cerec 3

CEREC 3 is the new modular CAD/CAM dental ceramic restoration system which the manufacturer claims will revolutionise dental practice.

The system consists of an imaging unit and a separate milling unit which can be positioned anywhere in the practice and linked by cables or radio signals, allowing simultaneous designing and milling. The rapid imaging, design and milling processes allow high-quality restorations to be completed in around 60-90 minutes.

CEREC 3 has been designed to adapt to the needs of the individual practice, with the options of direct or indirect working, chairside or labside installation. Machining times are 3-5 minutes less than with CEREC 2 and the new tapered diamond bur permits an improved profile for the occlusal tableau.

Go natural

Vita's VITAPAN teeth are now manufactured using a multi polymer bonding process.

The process means that the same durable material can be used throughout the whole tooth yet the unique five construction layers are all equally resistant to wear. The hand layered build-up not only makes highly detailed shading possible, but also gives each VITAPAN tooth an individuality that is normally found only in the natural dentition.

Prices were recently cut by almost 25 per cent, so a set of anteriors are now available at £9.90, with posteriors costing £9.75 plus VAT for both classical and new 3D shades.

A better bond

Fuji Bond LC is a light cured, resin reinforced glass ionomer dentine/enamel bonding agent which, it is claimed, creates the ideal dynamic link between composite and tooth structure offering many advantages.

Fuji Bond LC exhibits an excellent bond to deep s clerotic as well as superficial dentine. It is clinically insoluble and with a similar co-efficient of thermal expansion to that of dentine.

There is no need to etch or use any separate bonding agent when using Fuji Bond LC and it is also ideal for hypersensitivity.

Fuji Bond LC exhibits very high bond strengths to both enamel and dentine and provides continual fluoride release.

No beating round the Busch

Instrument set 5415 from Busch & Co is comprised of mainly cylindrical diamond instruments designed for the preparation of retentive parallel wall cavities and for the insertion of casting inlays and onlays.

Both flame-shaped instruments and conventional torpedo-shaped instruments are included in the set and are used to shape the approximal space.

The diamond instruments in the set are available in normal and fine grit sizes.

Crown cutters are also available from Busch & Co and are useful in routine practice for the separation of crown and bridge constructions.

Whatever their content, the alloys employed put high demands on the instruments used. Suitable cutting constructions are essential for the separation of shell crowns and modern bonded ceramic systems. The 36R and 38R crown cutters from Busch & Co have a fine cutting surface and a gentle, vibration-free operation.
