Nip it in the bud

OraScreen, the oral cancer detection system, formerly available from Stafford-Miller, is to be renamed OraTest, bringing it in line with the product's registered name in other countries around the world.

Left: Before staining
Right: OraTest highlights squamous cell carcinoma

Early stage carcinomas are asymptomatic and extremely difficult to detect. Oral cancer is usually recognised in the late stage leading to about a fifty percent five-year survival rate. With early detection the five-year survival rate is expected to be nearer ninety percent. This is where OraTest can help.

Designed for adjunctive use following a full head, neck and soft tissue examination, OraTest stains early, asymptomatic lesions a distinct blue, highlighting the smallest potential malignancy and alerting the dentist to the need for further examination. In a two-step protocol, OraTest is reapplied 10-14 days later to alleviate false positives due to trauma or temporary inflammatory lesions. A positive stain at the second test indicates referral for biopsy.

Zila, the OraTest manufacturer and product licence holder will now take responsibility for the product in the UK and will provide in-practice training and a range of practical support and patient information material.

Kerr blimey!

Kerr UK Ltd is launching a new composite material, Point 4, which combines the high polishing ability and aesthetic found in a microfil with the strength and durability of a hybrid.

Point 4 is based on the long established Prodigy and Herculite formulations. However, with the use of a new advanced grinding technology, it is now possible to produce an average particle size of 0.4 microns, consistently.

Traditional Hybrid Composites have an average particle size of 1 micron, which is larger than the wavelength of natural light (0.5 microns). This results in little scattering of light and a dead appearance. Point 4, with a particle size of 0.4 microns, causes greater scattering and colour transmission from the natural dentition. The light reflection of the cured Point 4 has a high gloss value and the result is a natural looking restoration.

Point 4 comes in 16 Vita shades plus 6 additional character shades to enable the highest aesthetic restorations to be achieved. It is also available in Unidose or Syringe delivery.

A new air compressor, the DT/30D has been launched by Bambi Air Compressors.

The model is fitted with a compact dessicant air dryer unit and has an integral aftercooler, auto purge facility and will achieve a dewpoint of -20°C.

Nozone

Nozone has been launched in the UK to reduce harmful levels of ground level ozone. Atmospheric Solutions Ltd claim that it is the only product available which eliminates harmful ground level ozone from the indoor atmosphere.

Ozone is prevalent in many work places as a variety of professional and office equipment may emit ozone. The Guidance Note from the Health and Safety Executive states that 'The acute toxicity of ozone has long been recognised and is well documented. Ozone is an irritant to mucus membranes of eyes and respiratory tract, and high concentrations can cause pulmonary oedema.'

Nozone is activated by opening during the working day and closing at night. Its active ingredient is a constituent of natural oils. This scientifically proven ingredient is impregnated into an absorbant pad and reduces the concentration of ozone in the room.
