Bug-free brush

Inventor Peter Chown of Kings Lynn has come up with the idea of the world's first self-disinfecting toothbrush.

The EverClean effectively eliminates the bacteria by automatically delivering a controlled amount of disinfectant up to a hollow tube from an aerosol in the base, which is then dispersed through holes at the base of each bristle. A cap then fits over the head preventing airborne contamination.

The EverClean also can provide a breath freshener using the same method, and even toothpaste itself.

Terrific textiles

Specialist coatings manufacturer, Liquid Plastics (LPL), has launched Reemat Decco - a high performance, woven glass textile wall covering.

The company have joined a European manufacturer of textured glass textile mats to produce a system on internal walls which combines effective anti-microbial protection with a decorative, patterned finish.

Reemat Decco is adhered and totally encapsulated into LPL's hygiene coatings to provide enhanced aesthetics without compromising the long-lasting protection against the growth of micro-organisms. The coating combats the growth of harmful and unsightly mould and bacteria, including E.coli, salmonella and MRSA.

The mat is washable, easy to maintain and compliant with all international hygiene legislation. It covers existing cracks in walls and can withstand harsh cleaning regimes without deterioration. It is non-flammable, scratch resistant and available in an extensive range of patterns and designs. Liquid Plastics' hygiene coatings are available in various decorative colours with a mid-sheen or semi-gloss finish.

Purple power!

The purple, non-latex examination glove manufactured by Safeskin, offers comfort and tactility combined with abrasion and chemical resistance.

The glove is manufactured from acrylonitrile butadiene, a synthetic polymer which, Safeskin claim eliminates the potential for type 1 allergic reaction to latex proteins. Potential irritants such as chemical accelerators and antioxidants are undetectable in this glove.

The non-latex polymer is immediately evident from its high visibility purple colour which provides instant differentiation between this and other gloves.

As they are free of dusting powder, the complications such as irritant dermatitis should be eliminated. They are also extremely thin with textured finger tips. For further details, tel: 01444 484 044.

Banish brush bacteria

In a recent research paper - by Verran et al published in Microbios 1996 - coliform bacteria - of which E.coli. is one - were found on 57% of the toothbrushes tested.

It is assumed that bacteria remain alive and multiply amongst the plaque and debris between the moist bristles of a toothbrush.

Brushtox antiseptic toothbrush cleanser can be sprayed into the bristles to disinfect the brush, killing most infections carried in saliva and found on toothbrushes.

Brushtox can be bought in Boots the Chemist or through Dental Health Boutique for re-sale.
