Toothy Tips for Tiny Tots

In response to studies showing high levels of severe tooth decay among toddlers, the National Dairy Council has launched a new booklet promoting healthy teeth for the under fives.

The booklet contains useful information prepared by dental professionals and nutritionists who agree that, unlike squash and fizzy drinks, milk does not harm children's teeth. Also included is:

  • How to select a healthy diet for one-to five-year-olds

  • Tooth-friendly snack ideas, such as cheese and yoghurt

  • Quick, delicious and easy-to-prepare recipes

  • Suitable drinks for children.

Copies of the Smile booklet are available free of charge from the National Dairy Council, 5-7 John Princes St, London, W1M 0AP.

Virtual symposium

In September 1998, ESPE Dental AG held the first International Dental Symposium on Composites and Compomers in Munich.

Opinion leaders from around the world met to discuss the possibilities and limitations of modern restorative materials and techniques based upon the results of current clinical research. Experts reached a consensus on their recommendation for best practice in restorative treatment.

Prof. Dr. Reinhard Hickel — Joint Chairman of the first composite symposium.

Now, ESPE have published all the contributions and results from the First International ESPE Dental Symposium on an interactive CD-ROM.

From a menu, the user can 'enter' the Symposium direct, play back video sequences of presentations and read the abstracts from individual speakers. Also, it is possible to view the graphs, charts or slides from the individual presentations and call up the expert consensus. For a free copy of the CD phone 01565 755 408.

The Midas touch

The Midas range from Panadent presents an assortment of four stainless steel instruments which, after being polished to a high mirror finish, are then totally TiN coated. This treatment renders the instrument surface much harder than normal steel instruments and has the additional bonus of creating a nonstick feature. Apart from creating an instrument that reduces sticking of composite and glass ionomer materials, material discolouration is also avoided.

The set of four instruments is priced at £69.97 and contains two spatulas, a ball ended filling instrument and a carver. Instruments can be purchased individually at a price range from £17.63 to £21.47.

Better be Prompt!

Prompt is the new all-in-one compomer adhesive from ESPE who claim it is much faster to use than traditional compomer systems as it requires no second coat and no light curing. Prompt is rubbed in for 15 seconds and then air dried.

Prompt also offers impressive bond strengths to enamel and dentine when used in combination with all standard compomers including Dyract, F2000, Compoglass and Hytac. It also releases fluoride.

The two components of the adhesive are contained in separate colour coded blister reservoirs which are mixed together in an activation stage, then the microbrush is wetted with adhesive ready for immediate use.

With Prompt L-Pop, the adhesive is freshly mixed for each individual application with an optimum composition and greater hygiene. They claim it is so simple that errors associated with bottle bonding systems are eliminated.

Ariston acid control

Ivoclar-Vivadent has launched Ariston pHc, a white restorative material which has the added advantage of giving active caries protection by controlling acidity levels around the restoration.

When intraoral conditions lead to a rise in acidity, especially after the intake of short chain carbohydrates, Ariston pHc's immediate release of ions result in pH levels around the restoration which do not fall below 5.5, and therefore never reach the critical level at which secondary caries is likely to develop. It also retains its anti-bacterial fluoride releasing properties, as well as neutralising acids for as long as the restoration is in place.

Like amalgam, Ariston pHc relies on mechanical retention and requires no bonding agent, although a liner is applied as a desensitising agent. Since Ariston pHc can be applied into the cavity in layers up to 4mm thick, many types of defects can be restored with a single layer. Application is quick and easy, requiring no rubber dam or etching.

Ariston pHc is available only in a single universal white shade, and is not tooth-coloured. It is therefore suitable only for posterior restorations. Also, the abrasion resistance is comparable with that of a good state-of-the-art fine grain composite.

Rely on RelyX

RelyX cements have been introduced by 3M Dental fulfilling the need for specific materials with properties for either routine permanent cementation or enhanced bonding of ceramic restorations. RelyX luting cement (previously known as Vitremer luting cement) was the first resin modified glass ionomer permanent cement for routine metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal indirect restorations. Because of the chemical bonding to tooth structure, RelyX luting cement provides high fracture strength, fluoride release and minimal solubility.

Also in the range, RelyX ARC cement has been formulated for enhanced bonding to all surfaces for all indirect indications and endodontic posts. Available in two natural, tooth coloured shades, it is delivered through the 3M no-touch 'Clicker' system which can dispense uniform and accurate amounts of paste accordingly.

The RelyX cements are presented in a kit including RelyX luting cement, RelyX ARC cement, RelyX ceramic primer, Scotchbond One adhesive, accessories and pictoral guides.
