Lunar magnetism, polar displacements and primeval satellites in the Earth–Moon system

Abstract

The discovery that rocks of the lunar crust possess remanent magnetism is a surprising result in view of the fact that the present Moon does not exhibit a magnetic field, nor was there once evidence of an iron core in which one could be generated. This review looks at the concept of lunar palaeomagnetism and discusses its implications for lunar science as a whole.
