A measurement of the IR flux from a radio lobe

Abstract

Prompted by the detection of optical radiation from the extended lobes and jets of some radio galaxies1–3, we have begun a search for IR radiation from such sources. Initially we have observed the western lobe of 3C247 (or 3C247W) at 2.2 µm and measured a flux density of 250±27 µJy (mK = 16.0±0.1). This result shows there to be a break in the spectrum between radio and optical wavelengths, such that the IR–optical spectrum is steeper than would be predicted from the radio and optical data alone. If the spectrum of 3C247W is applicable to other sources, then IR searches are a good way of finding high frequency counterparts of lobes of radio galaxies.
