Upper limits to X-ray emission from colliding stellar winds

Abstract

STELLAR winds are an important form of mass loss for many stars. In a binary system containing two similar mass losing stars, such winds can interact and shock to produce X rays1–3. The spectrum and intensity of radiation emitted by the shocked gas gives information on the velocity and rate of mass loss. Here we discuss a range of candidate systems in which such processes may be occurring.
