Influence of carbon dioxide on level of ionised calcium in squid axons

Abstract

SQUID axons contain about 0.1–0.5 mmol calcium per kg axoplasm, of which only about 0.1 µmol is ionised1–4. Although this level of ionised calcium can be made to change by altering either intracellular binding or membrane transport, little is known about the factors that regulate ionised calcium in physiological conditions. We now report experiments showing that one such factor might be the pCO2.
