Chinese hamster cell mutant with defective mitochondrial protein synthesis

Abstract

STABLE mutations affecting mitochondrial functions have been reported in lower eukaryotes1–7 and higher organisms8–11. We have described a procedure to select mutants with defective patterns of oxidative energy metabolism from established Chinese hamster fibroblasts8, which seem to satisfy most of their energy needs from glycolysis6. We describe here a mutant which has properties reminiscent of the petite phenotype of yeast ρ mutants5,13,14: a defect in mitochondrial protein synthesis leads to multiple enzymatic deficiencies.
