A simple physical model for X-ray burst sources

Abstract

THE observational properties of X-ray burst sources have recently been reviewed by Grindlay1 and Lewin2. These sources are concentrated in the direction of the galactic bulge and near the galactic plane. If they are at a mean distance of 10 kpc and the burst radiation is emitted isotropically, then the time-averaged luminosities in bursts are typically 1034–1036 erg S−1. Several of these sources may also have relatively steady X-ray luminosities2. Because of the limited sky coverage of available X-ray astronomy satellites, it seems likely that there are many times more burst sources in the galaxy than have heretofore been discovered.
