Abstract
THE increasing importance of vacuum insulation in technology1 and the recognition of the disruptive effects of surface discharges on satellites in space2 both impart fresh impetus to the understanding of the flashover effect. Solid insulators are certainly a source of gas in vacuo, particularly under bombardment, and can also cause local enhancement of electric stress through the acquisition of surface charges.
