Abstract
THE recent bright nova in Cygnus is probably one of the most remarkable galactic novae observed. Invisible on the Palomar Sky Survey it had climbed through at least 18 mag to its maximum of V = 1.8 on August 31.0 (UT). This led to some early speculations whether this might be the first galactic supernova observed since Kepler's days. This suggestion is not, however, supported by the spectrum of the object and is also inconsistent with the extremely rapid decline in brightness after maximum. On the other hand, assuming it to be a classical nova, there are indications that it is a very luminous one.
