Abstract
ATTENTION has been drawn to the similarities between tumour-associated antigens (TAA) and normal histocompatibility antigens, such as their high degree of polymorphism1,2, their cell surface behaviour3, and composition in terms of molecular weight and amino acid composition4. These similarities are reflected in methods developed for the isolation of tumour and histocompatibility antigens5–7. Furthermore an inverse relationship has been established between the expression of TAA and H-2 antigens on 3-methylcholanthrene-induced murine sarcomas8,9, whereas the appearance of TAA on aminoazo dye-induced rat hepatomas was associated with deletion of cell surface-expressed normal liver-specific antigens10.
