Cytotoxicity of alveolar macrophages for virus-infected cells

Abstract

MANY studies have emphasised the importance of cell-mediated immunity in virus infections1–4 and this has been measured in vitro by leukocyte-mediated killing of virus-infected target cells5–8. Although several investigators have concluded that the active cells in vitro are specifically sensitised T lymphocytes6,9, a similar activity for peritoneal macrophages has been suggested5. The role of alveolar macrophages in virus infections of the respiratory tract has, however, received little attention. Therefore, in a study of immunity to respiratory disease of cattle, the activity of cells washed from the lungs was investigated. This report describes experiments demonstrating the ability of such cells to kill parainfluenza virus-infected cells.
