Effect of dexamethasone on herpes simplex virus type 2 infection in vitro

Abstract

MORRHENN et al.1 reported that when polyoma virus-infected cultures of mouse embryo fibroblasts and 3T3 cells were treated with physiological doses of corticosteroids, plaque formation was enhanced tenfold. Because the plaques appeared earlier and were larger in the presence of steroids, they suggested that the rate of production of virus was also increased. It has also been reported that glucocorticoids influence in vitro infections with murine leukaemia virus and mouse mammary tumour virus2,3. Since there is epidemiological evidence that herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2) can be oncogenic in man4 and evidence that inactivated HSV can produce malignant transformation in vitro5, we studied the effect of corticosteroids on HSV-2 infection in mouse embryo fibroblasts and 3T3 cells, the two cell types in which effects had been noted with polyoma virus. We report here that dexamethasone has different effects on HSV-2 infection in vitro depending on both the type of cell tested and the characteristics of the viral strain used.
