Two functional states of the RNA polymerases in the rat hepatic nuclear and nucleolar fractions

Abstract

IN eukaryotic cells, the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase is known to be bound to chromatin1. As it is known that chromatin is a restricted template2,3, the question is whether all or only a fraction of the RNA polymerases bound to the chromatin is functionally active. The experiments reported here provide evidence that only a fraction of the RNA polymerases present in both nuclei and the nucleolar fraction is functionally active on chromatin.
