Abstract
INDIVIDUAL species of malaria parasites are highly host specific1 but the mechanisms which determine susceptibility or innate resistance are poorly understood2. In vitro methods for the short-term culture of erythrocytic forms of Plasmodium knowlesi3 and for isolating free merozoite preparations minimally contaminated with host cells4 have provided a basis for studying the ability of serum and of red cells from susceptible and resistant hosts to support the growth and multiplication of this simian parasite.
