Lactation following Therapeutic Abortion with Prostaglandin F

Abstract

THERE is little information concerning the effects of the prostaglandins on the mammary gland. Pregnant rats lactate after premature parturition induced by prostaglandin F (PGF)1, and lactogenesis is induced through the release of prolactin2. It has also been shown that PGE1 decreases the milk-ejection activity of oxytocin in the rabbit and rat3,4 whilst in the guinea-pig5 the milk-ejection activity of oxytocin is not decreased by PGE1, PGE2, PGE or PGF, which in this species all possess milk-ejection activity per se.
