Simultaneous Acoustic and Optical Microscopy of Biological Specimens

Abstract

IN a recent article1 we presented a brief description of an apparatus for acoustic microscopy that worked in real time and was capable of resolving detail of 25 µm using a sound wavelength of 15 µm in water, that is, at an operating frequency of 100 MHz. We report here an improved technique that allows simultaneous display of optical and acoustic images so that they may be directly compared. This combined technique should be of great value in the assessment of potential applications of acoustic microscopy.
