Abstract
To assess the effect of fast neutron irradiation on its structure and mechanical properties, a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based fibre, manufactured by Rolls Royce Limited, was irradiated in the test facilities of the WR1 organic cooled nuclear reactor at temperatures in the range 400°–700° C. Mechanical tests were made at room temperature on the fibres before and after irradiation using a Tecam microtensile test machine1 and a gauge length of 1 cm. Fibre structure was studied by conventional X-ray diffraction techniques which have been described elsewhere2. Fibre densities were measured by a gradient technique, the gradient components being carbon tetrachloride and tetrabromoethane.
