Abstract
A RECENT editorial in Nature1 on non-velocity redshifts in galaxies overlooks an important early reference to the subject2. In that work we demonstrated from an analysis of all galaxy redshift data available at that time (1963) that (a) the Holmberg effect (a supposed systematic error depending on galaxy type, exposure time and nuclear magnitude) does not exist—that is, the effects noted by Holmberg were accidental and disappeared when a larger sample was considered; and (b) the mean redshift of the Virgo cluster galaxies increases systematically and monotonically from 〈V〉 ≃ + 900 km s−1 at type E to 〈V〉 ≃ + 1,800 km s−1 at type Sc, and more precisely as follows: The difference 〈V(S)〉−〈V(E, L)〉 = (1,559 ± 148) −(990 ± 85)= +569 ± 170 is significant at the 3.3 σ level.
