L-Asparaginase and Complement

Abstract

L-ASPARAGINASE, widely regarded as a potential oncolytic agent1–6, is known to depress both cellular and humoral immunity. Our investigation of the effect of L-asparaginase on the complement system, described in what follows, reveals a more complicated interaction—the enzyme inhibits the complement in whole serum in vitro but is a potent activator of the same system in certain circumstances.
