Preliminary Study of the North of England Earthquake of August 9, 1970

Abstract

The earthquake felt over a wide area in the north of England on August 9, 1970, had the highest magnitude (4.9) for an earthquake on land in the United Kingdom since the introduction of the Richter Scale in 1935. Its epicentre lay near to the junction of the Pennine and Dent faults and the Stainmore Trough, and the focal depth was approximately 15 km.
