Abstract
THE thermoluminescence dating technique applied to volcanic lava has been reported by Aitken et al.1. In their preliminary experiments, grain sizes of between 40 and 80 µm in diameter were selected by Franz-type magnetic separators, and a spurious glow was observed even from some young lavas. This spurious glow was attributed to the impurities which are difficult to separate from the luminescent grains with magnetic separators.
