In vitro Cytotoxic Activity of Thymus Cells sensitized to Alloantigens

Abstract

THE thymus plays an important part in the development of certain immune reactions. Neonatally thymectomized mice showed an impaired antibody response to heterologous erythrocytes and serum proteins1. Recent studies, have demonstrated that collaboration between thymus-derived cells and bone marrow-derived cells was essential for mice to respond to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) by producing haemolysin-forming cells2–4. Thymus-derived cells, although undergoing mitosis in response to the antigenic stimulus5, did not produce antibody6, but influenced bone marrow-derived precursor cells to differentiate into antibody-producing cells4.
