Abstract
PROTON conduction in hydrogen-bonded substances has attracted attention because the observed mobilities are of a comparable order with the electronic mobilities in some semiconductors. Indeed, these materials have been termed protonic semiconductors1. The work in this area is motivated mainly by the interest in the proton in biological processes1. As the simplest structure in this group, ice with the H3O+ defect has been studied intensively1–5.
