Abstract
A NUMBER of polymers of ribonueleotides are capable of inducing interferon and a state of cellular resistance to viruses1–7. One of the most effective of these materials is the synthetic double-stranded polyribonucleotide, polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly I·poly C). Cellular resistance to viral infection can usually be effected by much smaller amounts of this material than are required to stimulate the production of any detectable amounts of interferon1–7. Thus there is an interesting possibility that poly I·poly C might bring about a state of viral resistance to viral infection in the absence of interferon formation. Desmyter et al. showed that cells from a line of African green monkey cells (Vero) were unable to produce interferon even though they responded to added interferon and became resistant to viral infection12. The use of this line of cells allowed us to determine directly, in at least one case, whether interferon producing ability was a necessity for the antiviral resistance resulting from poly I·poly C.
